Usage guidelines
The platform provides various approaches to its content:
1. Predefined units
The tiles on the starting page and the tab menu items lead to predefined units such as projects, editions, main actors or thematic focal points (Focus). The units connect data and edited documents within a defined research context and provide insight into their origins and contextual relationships.
2. Full-text search
The full-text search queries both the names of entities and their contents (string match). For example, a letter can be found via its metadata – such as sender, recipient or date – and, if the letter has been edited, also via the text passages it contains.
The number of results is influenced by truncation and fuzzy matching, as well as by the number of search terms used:
- * represents any number of characters, ? a single character |
example: Joh* returns John, Johann and Johannes; Me?er returns Meier, Meyer, etc. - ~ matches similar spellings |
example: Wegner~ returns Degner, Wagner, etc. - Multiple terms are combined by means of AND logic – all terms must appear in the search result.
3. Filter
Individual entity groups – such as persons, letters, places or institutions – can be searched for in the particular registers. The filters are tailored to the characteristics of the relevant group and adapt dynamically to new data. For example, places can be filtered by type, such as bodies of water or municipalities, or persons can be filtered by their mentions in the editions.
4. Counter-references
Linkages to other entities can be accessed from the different entities. For example, you can navigate directly from a person to all letters, reviews, or places where they are mentioned. These lists are automatically expanded as new content is linked.
Combined application
The various search options may be combined to achieve precise results. One possible search process is as follows:
- Use full-text search with truncation (*), placeholders (?) or fuzzy search (~) to generate a complete list of hits.
- Then limit the hits using filters, e.g. by entity group or typology.
- Select an entity and switch to all linked objects via cross-references.
In this way, search queries can be refined step by step. Conversely, it is also possible to start with the predefined units that already represent a limited amount of data and edited documents.
